Finance is an essential skill to master if you hope to succeed in business. Understanding the income and expenditure of a business, how to prepare financial statements and reports, and how to make decisions about finance with the information you have available – these are all key techniques that you will develop during our online short postgraduate course in business and finance.
- This course also allows you to develop more general skills that will assist in other areas of your personal and professional life, such as communication, time management and innovative thinking. Your core modules will form the foundation of your study, as you explore:
- The main principles and practices of contemporary management and organisational behaviour
- Financial decision-making in the short and long term
- Micro- and macro-economics and their relevance to managerial decision-making
- Project management methodology and environments
- Business strategy and strategic management
- The framework of accounting and preparation of financial statements
- You will also have the chance to select some optional modules, on topics such as leadership, marketing strategy and human resource management.
- Once you have completed your course, you have the opportunity to advance onto a full degree in business with finance.

- We know that many people from non-traditional backgrounds would succeed on our courses! That’s why we offer two different entry routes, taking into account your prior work experience and relevant qualifications. You will also need to meet our English language requirements.
- Additionally, you will need to pass your first assignment set within your two-week induction period of the course in order to continue with your studies.
Academic entry route
In order to satisfy the academic entry route requirements for our PG Dip Business with Finance, you must have the following qualifications as a minimum:
- An undergraduate degree from an approved institution, equivalent to a UK Honours degree, or a relevant professional qualification
Work experience entry route
In order to satisfy the work experience entry route requirements for our PG Dip Business with Finance, you must meet the following criteria:
- At least five years’ senior level work experience
English language requirements
- As our courses are delivered in English, a high proficiency with English is required. If English is not your first language, your English ability should be equivalent to an IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5. Don’t worry if you don’t hold an IELTS or equivalent qualification – we offer a free online English test to assess your proficiency.
- You don’t need to prove your English ability if you are a national of, or have completed a qualification equivalent to a UK degree
- The Postgraduate Diploma in Business with Finance is made up of the following modules and, upon completion, is equal to a total of 120 credits at Level 7.

- Management: Principle and Practices (20 credits)
- Economics for Managers (20 credits)
- Financial Decision Making (20 credits)
- Project Management (10 credits)
- Business Strategy (10 credits)
- Financial Management (20 credits)
- Optional modules equal to 20 credits:
- Leadership in Practice (20 credits)
- Marketing: Principles and Practices (20 credits)
- Human Resource Management (10 credits)
- Human Resource Management in Context (10 credits)
- Marketing Strategy & Management (20 credits)
- Upon completion of your PG Dip Business with Finance we offer the opportunity for you to progress on to study for an MSc Business with Finance (180 credits).

- When paying for your undergraduate or postgraduate course up-front, we’ll offer you a discount of 10% for students starting their course in the 2020-21 academic year, and 5% for students starting their course in the 2021-22 academic year.
Alumni discount
- If you are a previous graduate with the University of Essex or University of Essex Online, we’ll award you a 10% alumni discount on your postgraduate tuition fees when you continue your studies to Masters level. This is only applicable to students studying online and does not apply to students studying on campus.
- The Alumni discount cannot be used in combination with the International scholarship.
