  • This programme will give you a chance to understand theories of learning, philosophy and education led by expert tutors.
  • Working alongside fellow teaching professionals, this course examines professional practice in higher education. It enables you to develop the skills and knowledge needed to engage in a range of practices to ensure ongoing professional development, including critical reflection, research and enquiry, and participation in discourse with relevant communities of practice.

Throughout this course, you’ll explore a broad range of topics including:

  • An introductory overview of the historical and philosophical context in which educational practice sits
  • Learning the fundamental principles of assessment and key issues in contemporary educational assessment practice
  • The theory and practice of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL)
  • Developing your skills as reflective professional practitioners
  • learning pedagogical strategies
  • Once you have completed our PG Certificate Education (Educational Practice) you have the option to progress onto our PG Diploma in Education or our full Masters programme.

*Please note that PG Cert Education (Educational Practice) is not an equivalent to a PGCE qualification, which is a teacher training qualification in the UK.

  • We know that many people from non-traditional backgrounds would succeed on our courses! That’s why we offer two different entry routes, taking into account your prior work experience and relevant qualifications. You will also need to meet our English language requirements.
  • Additionally, you will need to pass your first assignment set within your two-week induction period of the course in order to continue with your studies.

Academic entry route
In order to satisfy the academic entry route requirements for our PG Cert Education (Educational Practice), you must have the following qualifications as a minimum:

  • an undergraduate degree from an approved institution, equivalent to a UK Honours degree, or a relevant professional qualification

Work experience entry route
In order to satisfy the work experience entry route requirements for our PG Cert Education (Educational Practice), you must meet the following criteria:

  • at least two years’ teaching experience in a post-compulsory educational setting

English Language Requirements

  • As our courses are delivered in English, a high proficiency with English is required. If English is not your first language, your English ability should be equivalent to an IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5. Don’t worry if you don’t hold an IELTS or equivalent qualification – we offer a free online English test to assess your proficiency.
  • You don’t need to prove your English ability if you are a national of, or have completed a qualification equivalent to a UK degree
  • The PG Cert Education (Educational Practice) is made up of the following modules and, upon completion, is equal to a total of 60 credits at Level 7.

Level 7 modules:

  • Philosophy of Education and Theories of Learning & Teaching (20 credits)
  • Delivering Effective Teaching and Learning (20 credits)
  • Introduction to Educational Assessment (10 credits)
  • Using Technology in Teaching, Learning and Assessment (10 credits)

* These modules are core and must be passed in order to achieve the award.

  • Upon completion of your PG Cert Education (Educational Practice) we offer the opportunity for you to progress on to study for a PG Dip Education (120 credits) or our full Master of Education (M.Ed.) (180 credits).

Full payment discount

  • When paying for your undergraduate or postgraduate course up-front, we’ll offer you a discount of 10% for students starting their course in the 2020-21 academic year, and 5% for students starting their course in the 2021-22 academic year.

Alumni discount 

  • If you are a previous graduate with the University of Essex or University of Essex Online, we’ll award you a 10% alumni discount on your postgraduate tuition fees when you continue your studies to Masters level. This is only applicable to students studying online and does not apply to students studying on campus. 
  • The Alumni discount cannot be used in combination with the International scholarship.
