Learn how to create the perfect sounds for video games, television, films and much more with the Sound Design Program at Trebas Institute.

Our instructors are constantly working to update the program to keep you at the cutting-edge of the industry. Additionally, our team are trained in state-of-the-art recording and editing equipment to help you thrive in any aspect of today’s modern recording industry. As a result, you’ll be ready to take on roles including sound mixer, Foley artist and much more.

Skills and Competencies
Throughout the program, you will develop a range of skills and be able to perform a range of tasks. Some of these include:

  • Sound design for visual media (film, TV, video games, etc.)
  • Foley (the reproduction of everyday sounds) for visual media
  • Sound recording and mixing
  • Operate industry standard digital audio software programs
  • Audio postproduction for film and video
  • Assess the acoustics of a room or studio space
  • Music production (music theory, composition, electronic production tools)
  • Sound for DJ applications (creating loops, sound effects, etc.)
  • Ear training
  • Effectively navigate the audio industry
  • Understand and implement career development activities

Under the provisions of section 4 of the College Education Regulations concerning the conditions of admission, a person who has received instruction considered sufficient by the college and meets any of the following conditions may be admitted to a program of studies leading to an Attestation of College Studies:

  • The person has interrupted his or her full-time studies or pursued full-time postsecondary studies for at least 2 consecutive terms or 1 school year;
  • The person is covered by an agreement entered into between the college and an employer or by a government program of studies;
  • The person has interrupted his or her full-time studies for one term and pursued full-time postsecondary studies for one term; or
  • The person holds a Diploma of Vocational Studies (DVS/DEP).

Documents required for your admission:
All applications for admission must be accompanied by the following documents:

  • Completed application form
  • Non-refundable application fee of $50.00 and Admission fee of $200.00 ($250.00)
  • Birth certificate (certified copy)
  • Most recent academic transcript or diploma:
  • Issued by MES (Ministère de l'Enseignement supérieur), if a student in Quebec
  • Issued by the province or territory, if a student outside Quebec
  • Issued by the institution or state, if an international student
  • Any official documents issued outside Quebec must be a certified copy or the original. 

Documents written in language other than English or French must be accompanied by an official translation.

Term 1: During your first term, you will focus on the following: principles of audio theory and how sound reacts through the signal path; the fundamentals of music theory and how to improve critical listening; MIDI language as it is used for creating and arranging music (along with learning how to use the related software programs); as well as studio recording techniques in a professional studio with real musicians.

Term 2: The second term will enable you to consider the foundations of sound design using various techniques such as differential synthesis and digital sampling; sound design techniques for DJ and live performance applications; audio post-production techniques to mix audio tracks, sound effects, music and dialogue in timed synchronization with video. You’ll also focus on the advanced functionalities of Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) such as Pro Tools.

Term 3: Your final semester will focus on advanced techniques to design custom sounds using differential, additive, spectral, granular synthesis and digital sampling; sound design for video games by creating complex interactive mechanisms that respond to the changes within the game and adapt to the player's choices; the structure of the audio industry and how to effectively advance your career within it; as well as how to produce music using cutting-edge, industry standard music production software programs.
