Would you like to delve into the world of criminal psychology? Do you want to understand the core psychological and criminological theories? Our course is the perfect introduction to the fascinating and challenging worlds of criminology and psychology.
  • Throughout the programme, you’ll develop your own knowledge of the scientific and theoretical underpinnings of psychology, including its historical origins, progression and limitations. You’ll gain an awareness of the variety of different mental processes that take place in the brain and how this knowledge can be applied to criminal psychology, specifically in relation to the techniques used in offender profiling and eyewitness testimony. You’ll also be able to recognise a range of influences on psychological functioning and how these are conceptualised across the two core discipline areas of social psychology and cognitive psychology.

You’ll improve your psychology and criminology knowledge in specialist areas such as:

  • criminal liability and the key definitions associated with criminality
  • Theories and methods in the field of social psychology
  • understanding the options available, throughout the criminal justice system, for dealing with offenders
  • The range of methodologies and theoretical perspectives used in offender profiling
  • The role of memory as the mediator of cognitive processes
  • Upon completion of your CertHE Criminal Psychology we offer the opportunity for you to progress on to study for a BSc (Hons) degree (360 credits).

  • We believe that education should be accessible for everyone. That’s why we offer an open entry route – meaning you don’t need any prior academic or work experience in order to start studying with us. You will also need to meet our English language requirements.
  • You will need to pass your first assignment set within the first three weeks of the course in order to continue with your studies.

English language requirements

  • As our courses are delivered in English, a high proficiency with English is required. If English is not your first language, your English ability should be equivalent to an IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0.
  • Don’t worry if you don’t hold an IELTS or equivalent qualification – we offer a free online English test to assess your proficiency.
  • You don’t need to prove your English ability if you are a national of, or have completed a qualification equivalent to a UK degree
  • The CertHE Criminal Psychology is made up of the following modules and, upon completion, is equal to a total of 120 credits.

Level 4 modules:

  • Fundamentals of Effective Learning in Psychology (15 credits)
  • Introduction to Social Psychology (15 credits)
  • Crime & Society (15 credits)
  • Introduction to Cognitive Psychology (15 credits)
  • Introduction to Offender Profiling (15 credits)*

One optional module:

  • Dealing with Offending Behaviour (15 credits)
  • Personality and Intelligence (15 credits)
  • Introduction to Research Methods (30 credits)
  • Upon completion of your CertHE Criminal Psychology we offer the opportunity for you to progress on to study for a BSc (Hons) degree (360 credits).

* These modules are core and must be passed in order to achieve the award.

  • When paying for your undergraduate or postgraduate course up-front, we’ll offer you a discount of 10% for students starting their course in the 2020-21 academic year, and 5% for students starting their course in the 2021-22 academic year. 

Alumni discount 

  • If you are a previous graduate with the University of Essex or University of Essex Online, we’ll award you a 10% alumni discount on your postgraduate tuition fees when you continue your studies to Masters level. 
  • This is only applicable to students studying online and does not apply to students studying on campus. The Alumni discount cannot be used in combination with the International scholarship. Scholarships International scholarship (all courses) International students residing in specific regions outside of the UK may be eligible for a partial scholarship for our undergraduate and postgraduate online courses.
